Determining the degree of damage to the central nervous system (CNS) makes it possible to evaluate the results of various methods of treatment for perinatal asphyxia, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and intraventricular hemorrhages, as well as the risk of developing a neurological deficit. A wide range of biomarkers, including neuroproteins, calcium-binding protein, vasoactive substances, markers of oxidative stress, and inflammatory mediators, have been studied in evaluating the complications of hypoxic CNS injury. It is known that brain injury increases the concentration of a number of biomarkers in various biological fluids, and this condition correlates with the severity of damage, regardless of gestational age. Thus, this article presents a review of the literature aimed at assessing the significance of biomarkers in the diagnosis of various brain injuries in young children.
