Abstract. Virtually everything we know about the cosmos comes from the study of electromagnetic radiation. We have sent spacecraft to a few nearby objects in our solar system to analyze or bring back samples. We routinely detect cosmic rays—high energy particles originating in spectacular astrophysical events like supernova. But most of what we know comes from measuring the intensity of electromagnetic radiation.
