Abstract. The term bilingual education has many meanings, with different positive and negative associations and different histories. Take three cases. First, bilingual education is loosely applied to schools where bilingual children attend. However, such schools do not teach bilingualism. Rather, the goal is to quickly transition the child from the home, minority language to the dominant, majority language. Second, the term refers to children who are allowed to use their mother tongue in the classroom for a short time before switching to the majority language. Third, bilingual education appears to be a more appropriate label for schools where students learn through two languages in the classroom.

Keywords: language dominant, potential influence, no prescriptions, immersion education, mathematical concepts.
